This project builds upon the existing near-sdk-zig repository which currently contains basic host function bindings and a minimal contract example. The proposal will transform this foundation into a comprehensive, production-ready SDK that matches the core functionality of near-sdk-rs and near-sdk-js. Zig represents the highest-paid programming language community with strong growth in systems programming, WebAssembly applications, and high-performance computing. The language's memory safety without garbage collection overhead, superior WebAssembly compilation, and compile-time optimization capabilities make it ideally suited for blockchain smart contract development. Technical feasibility is confirmed through Zig's Tier 1 WebAssembly support and existing proof-of-concept implementation in the repository. The streamlined 6-month timeline focuses on delivering essential functionality while maintaining high quality and comprehensive documentation. Expected outcomes include 50+ active Zig developers on NEAR within 6 months, successful smart contract deployments, and establishment of NEAR as a leading blockchain for systems programming languages.
